There’s a story to be told Like all stories never old We have grown with science fiction Ever closer now to home We’re all hooked on social media Mirroring turned on machines We’re defaulting on standby What about AI? We borrow from the future The clock is ticking All day long I’ve been sitting here making a song Without a care I am not elsewhere And where should I be? We’re still sitting in our time machines Craving for our meanings And we can only reap from what we are sowing Fee-fee-feeding from a narrative That gives us all anxiety We want to be together Now connected through the ether Our identities meet with entities And it’s a crowded shore Pay attention to the noise You can’t listen to one voice We borrow from the future The clock is ticking All day long I’ve been sitting here making a song Without a care I am not elsewhere And where should I be? We’re still sitting in our time machines Craving for our meanings And we can only reap from what we are sowing Time machines Time machines Time machines

Hands onto the camera, is this New York? In his mind a movie with the Factory’s cohort He’s not seen in galleries, just goes for rides He plays with roles, he thinks he’s Andy Warhol Until night when the stars will surround him in the dark When the stars will surround him in the dark In the park on the bench unsuspecting lovers steal a kiss Caught on camera the stars will surround him in the dark When the stars will surround him in the dark In the lens here is Lou as he’s coming down now the streets are red With the sun on the steering wheel tracking Edie upon her sad, sad smile This world is full of stars, this camera keeps rolling It’s slowly getting dark, he just walks away Disappears into the shop, makes provisions for the night Here comes night when the stars will surround him in the dark When the stars will surround him in the dark Watching washing machines, the rise and fall of the clothes in the launderette Counting coins, silver moons keep on rolling in the dark When the stars will surround him in the dark While the sound of the motor sings a spin cycle to the west And the moon light here on the counter laid in a starlet contest Now he goes around, imaginary car Dreaming of the Velvet Underground under the stars But the only place he knows too well is on this bench Under silver clouds, a Campbell soup, a beer, a blanket Here comes night when the stars will surround him in the dark When the stars will surround him in the dark Painting streets under stars in the dark Daring dreams that seem to keep falling apart Sleeping in a cardboard box on a cold night And he’s gone, spark out under the elements Then the stars will surround him in the dark Then the stars will surround him in the dark In the dark

We Are Stars 04:08
We are stars from another time We’ve been here many many times We’re the seers, we’re the ones you go to When you fear there’s nowhere to go If you climb to the top you see We are bright, up all night, you blink Generating sound Here we are all around We are stars in the great unknown Frequencies could be the key High and low, make the universe, the world go around To the tune you don’t know just yet If you climb to the top you see We are bright, up all night, you blink Generating sound Here we are all around Now you think you have found the stars You’re surrounded You are a star from another time You’re the brightest thing Obscuring our capacity To extrapolate ourselves from your blinding light We are stars from another time We’ve been here many many many times We’re the seers, we’re the ones you go to When you fear there’s nowhere to go We are stars We are stars We are stars We are stars We are stars We are stars

Since this roller coaster of a ride That took us by surprise We’ve seemed to want to dance So now we dance Never danced like this before Every single step of tango, waltz Dissipates our thoughts Drill and dubstep, house and techno Want to dance, so now we dance Never danced like this before Every time Every time Every time it’s bleak we dance Every time Every time Every time it’s bleak we dance Where the hell have we just been I feel that we’re stepping on shaky ground Our feet tap upon egg shells We’d better do the light step Don’t wanna see the peak yet If we’re lost in another black hole Just another black thought We go foxing the trot trot Clouds disintegrate There’s hope, in the aftermath we blossom Every time Every time Every time it’s bleak we dance Every time Every time Every time it’s bleak we dance We’ve seemed to want to dance So now we dance Never danced like this before Want to dance So now we dance Never danced like this before Every time Every time Every time it’s bleak we dance

You say nothing to say it all If nothing counts as nothing then I’m sold I forget to be forgetful, write this down House bound a new effective ground You say nothing to say it all The book has told me nothing but I fall I count on an angel off duty Always just a futility of life If that is beauty I know I will fall Could be just peeking into nothing more When you want to erode into nothing It could just stop you sinking too far Oh, there’s nothing I want more Oh, there’s nothing I want more You say nothing to say it all If nothing counts as nothing then I’m sold I’m not so sure if nothing’s at the door Even Pierrot strikes a pose on the moon Generally speaking We could always be just Peeking into nothing There is more, just thinking Stops you sinking when you Want to fall to nothing All because If that is beauty I know I will fall Could be just peeking into nothing more When you want to erode into nothing It could just stop you sinking too far If that is beauty I know I will fall Could be just peeking into nothing more Oh, there’s nothing I want more Oh, there’s nothing I want more Oh, there’s nothing I want more Oh, there’s nothing I want more Oh, there’s nothing I want more Oh, there’s nothing I want more Oh, there’s nothing I want more

Eyeliner 04:37
Boy, you’re wearing your eyeliner Boy you’re wearing your eyeliner Dressed for show 24/7 Something about your self-awareness You know just how to push All the right buttons and yet You’re still subtle in the limelight You’re a casualty of pleasure Dressed in sequins sparked in white lines Boy, you’re wearing your eyeliner And you know just how to get your way Boy, you’re wearing your eyeliner And you know just how to get your way Walking the streets at night blinded by car lights In and out of bars, your sore eyes gazing At the stars, they are invisible in the city at night But you, you are rather high Like the stars Boy you’re wearing your eyeliner Pushing bars, pursuing the future Singing songs, capturing creatures Night after night Pinned up phrases on the wall Are the cut-ups that inspired you You’re a dandy of the new world Splicing pieces of the action Boy, you’re wearing your eyeliner And you know just how to get your way Boy, you’re wearing your eyeliner And you know just how to get your way Walking the streets at night blinded by car lights In and out of bars, your sore eyes gazing At the stars, they are invisible in the city at night But you, you are rather high Like the stars Boy, you’re wearing your eyeliner Boy, you’re wearing your eyeliner And you boy, you’re wearing your eyeliner And you boy, you’re wearing your eyeliner

Tommy Newton 06:28
I’m just visiting you said and smiled Oh, a traveller I said, your eyes Are like moon coming round Falling down horizon bound And I just Fell in love and as you came disguised So I loved to be fooled with the lie You checked in, I took your case You fell down horizon bound Settled in this hotel So beautiful to me We can be so happy I took you in my arms You fainted in the lift We made love, then I took you to church Only you can make my world Is your secret that slowly unfolds Shedding stories of survival? Bought a house by the lake, you and me And the booze, the flashbacks, the TVs Does the love turn around Once the secret is out you are bound They locked the doors You couldn’t turn around Exam after exam The water for your world Your family who wait The corporations’ greed Betrayal and our story Destined to break You could never go back to your star You could never grow this old All experiments taking their toll Just an alien lost into our world Into our world Into our world Into our world Into our world

With your graces and poses in a world full of pages The pages are ripped like his heart that you grip In and out of your rooms, of the jazzy stairs His world is slowing down in front of your smoky stare In the stillness of the night you’ve been seen by the pier Only few powerful understated phrases you can hear In the consuming heat of silence and as the morning tears the night You steal each other’s breath right in the cold air Aha Aha Will the boat float, will you climb in Stand and call to the river Freeing words to the future To change the world There’s a question mark You, him, him and the future And the reasoning falls apart Tear the page In the hastiness of actions you’ve been down to the waterway And the days of ideals take a different shape You, him, him and the future doesn’t then end too well Paper story turns red and it’s complicated Now the shape of your memory is jumbled with words Carefully reordered, here comes a different world As the future resumes you retreat in your head And the story makes room for what’s laying up ahead Aha Aha Will the boat float, will you climb in Stand and call to the river Freeing words to the future To change the world There’s a question mark You, him, him and the future And the reasoning falls apart Tear the page Tearing pages, forging phrases Gazes, meaning, stages Haze flowing to the future citing phrases Frenzy, jazz, young, new Changes, chapters coming Tearing pages, forging phrases Gazes, meaning, stages Haze flowing to the future citing phrases Frenzy, jazz, young, new Changes, chapters coming

Drinking slowly some cheap champagne In this shabby chic cafe All the old electric dreams Spilling drinks Hanging to our memories Treasure lost upon dusty banks Midnight strikes and we leave our seats Just our steps in the silent street Leaping shadows across the green Oh and we’re nearly there Turn the key the door is creaking We step in quietly while all are sleeping When we finally reach upstairs My eyes are stealing everything I want to take it all away Your coat Falls onto the parquet floor Behind every wanting Lines are woven in golden ink On the walls stars of old film prints Hold their breath as we inch away Oh our desire Everything moves with cheap champagne Even stars Everything moves with cheap champagne Every step to the sound of this beating heart Everything moves with cheap champagne Even stars Heading back to the sound of rain Deafening in its clarity What it’s clear just fades away Every step to the sound of this beating heart

A game is nothing but a game Unless you’re on this plane I learn how to play chess today I follow Alice through her maze Altered reality Altered reality Deep in a state of virtual dream Is everything just what it seems? Altered reality Altered reality What if you told me that you came To realise you understand Would that change something in the chain Or is it just a cycle game? Altered reality Altered reality Altered reality

Here comes the tide Washing the words Written in sand Eroding the land Those were fleeting times Listening eyes Whispering Mine, playing in reverse You were here And miles away A million miles away You’re too hot to be cool Too desolate and dark With your printed page and champagne And your favourite game A dreaming state The Guardian Of Your Mind Sometimes one Just can’t erase Those indelible marks Carved on the inside They don’t even dull With the years as they run Like ink does on skin Endurance flowers You’re too hot to be cool Too desolate and dark With your printed page and champagne And your favourite game A dreaming state The Guardian Of Your Mind The Guardian Of Your Mind The Guardian Of Your Mind Here comes the tide Washing the words Written in sand Eroding the land

Waterloo 04:17
You and me walking hand in hand Through the gate of the past The strength belongs to the battered souls A wall becomes soft as dust Don’t believe into carrying a plus sign Above the shoulder line Life is faster than light so we might hang around Waterloo is such a beautiful view tonight Now you take my hand And you do what you can To make my desires come true I believe in you Now you take my hand And you do what you can To make my desires come true I believe in you And all the little things That we recognise Are giving us immortality All those memories are ties There’s no currency out there That can buy you this bond We better make the most of things Wherever we are that’s our place Now you take my hand And you do what you can To make my desires come true I believe in you Now you take my hand And you do what you can To make my desires come true I believe in you

about

“Intoxicating, reflective, artistic and dramatic....Framed in a retro futuristic backdrop of funky plucked guitar fragments, a swaying beat scattered with Raf’s artful flights escapism intersecting the solar system between Bowie & Kate Bush” BC, GOD IS IN THE TV ZINE

“Raf and O have been purveyors of effervescent, avant-garde pop since 2008 … from apocalyptic, electronica-hued mini-symphonies to elegant, left-field David Bowie covers. ‘We Are Stars’ brings a sense of playfulness … Mischievous and bewitching” IB, ELECTRONIC SOUND

“A spellbinding lamentable love song … sublime…We Are Stars is an incredible album. Omnipresent throughout, there’s the angular, shredded and bended guitar of Scary Monsters era Robert Fripp and Carlos Alomar, and the strangely interesting progressions of the arty-pop and dress-up of that album.
Lou Reed meets Marianne Faithful
Kate Bush meets Jane Birkin
Lene Lovich meets Latin-flavoured Banshees ...The titular song itself an alternative, stressful The Man Who Fell To Earth soundtrack, yet recalls the influence of Tricky and Portishead. Raf and O remain one of the most individual acts in the UK; true inheritors of Bowie and Bush’s legacy and spirit.” DV, MONOLITH COCKTAIL

"This is the most exquisite album yet from Raf and O, who I believe belong to that select group of artists who create not only great music, but also a universe in which that music can live and breathe….from the soulful glam-swagger of ‘Still Sitting in our Time Machines’, through the indie-folk vocal acrobatics of ‘Andy under Stars’ and torch-song delicacy of the title track, to the frenetic 80s synth onslaught of ‘Every Time It’s Bleak, We Dance’…One of the album’s key tracks, ‘Tommy Newton’ follows. You may remember this name as David Bowie’s character in the SF masterpiece ‘The Man Who Fell to Earth – in the song Raf gives the perspective of Newton’s lover Mary-Lou. As the song closes, she describes Newton as “an alien / lost into our world”, tapping into not only the film character but evoking Bowie himself, her voice drifting over an aptly-chosen cyclic guitar motif….The gorgeous closer, ‘Waterloo’ has the stately progression of a rock ‘n’ roll era ballad, bowed double-bass and treated, wordless backing vocals cradling a hopeful conclusion, as if the past-honouring and future-seeking characteristics of the duo’s music have come to an understanding…It also feels right that the record reflects Raf and O’s twin inspirations – Bowie and Bush – in surprising and creative ways……I use the word ‘inspiration’ deliberately – rather than ‘influence’, say – because it’s not as if Raf and O simply sound like either Bowie or Bush. As I said, they’ve long sounded like no-one but themselves. It’s what they take from them in attitude, fearlessness: the way Raf’s voice swoops and soars without apparent boundaries" AA ARTMUSELONDON

"A hyper-colourful ride of joyously exotic sounds and idiosyncratic melodies which somehow melt together to make a gleaming, strident Art Pop whole. Abstract melodies morph seamlessly into sweet, emotionally thrilling chord shapes you NEVER see coming. Pop-xotica? Supernatural Folk? Post Prog Punk? One of 23's finest" THE SOAP COMPANY

With a background steeped in the avant-guard, critically acclaimed South-East London based duo Raf and O AKA Raf Mantelli and O Richard Smith return with a new cinematic art pop album ‘We Are Stars’ on Telephone Records, full of stories, inner struggles and beautiful melodies, inspired by movies, life and stars. Marking out their critically acclaimed song and sound world for over ten years, Raf and O have released four full length albums to date. Praised by The Quietus, FACT, and Electronic Sound amongst many, for their emotional depth of songwriting and intensity of performance, their supporters saw the likes of Mike Garson (David Bowie’s pianist/ long-term collaborator) eulogising Raf and O for their unique interpretation of Bowie’s Lady Grinning Soul. Sonic explorations have included setting music to Shakespeare, composing for theatre, performing highly regarded interpretations of David Bowie and Kate Bush songs and with special collaborations under their belt, they’ve played venues such as The Queen Elizabeth Hall and The Union Chapel.
Time Machine - Joe Muggs’ Top Ten Albums (FACT). Portal Launch - John Clarkson gig of the year (Pennyblackmusic). The Space Between Nothing And Desire earned accolades such as sublime, astonishing, enthralling and irresistible.
“From the poignant to the provocative to the playful ‘The Space Between Nothing And Desire’ is wonderfully theatrical and, unless you’re made of stone, quite irresistible. The intensity is off the scale.” Push, Electronic Sound
“The excellent Time Machine represents the very antithesis of EDM - There is a butterfly, acoustic delicacy and yet also the deceptive, steel strength of spider silk in their complex weaving - Raf’s vocal ranges far and wide in her emotional and lyrical foragings” – David Stubbs, The Quietus “
“Raf and O continue to charm and intrigue with their distinctive, avant-pop songs, which mix acoustic and processed electronic sounds” Sharon O’ Connell, METRO.
’We Are Stars’, their fifth album, is multi-faceted and cinematic, it reflects our contemporary society flourishing and struggling simultaneously: tinged in retro futuristic 50s blues and anxiety ridden, upbeat, thoughtful and metaphoric, can be summarised as existential arty poetic visual pop for the 21st century.
It’s a musical story-telling journey through worlds, stars, lives, survival, sad stories, love stories, stories gone wrong, the beat goes on ...
Effortlessly stepping into various musical roles, both Raf and O have been known for performing on various instruments on both their own songs and several interpretations, where the instruments are merely the vehicles that convey the duo’s musical language and vision; this seems to possess a cohesive flow that can be pointed to an emotive and painterly signature approach to whatever musical material the duo find themselves experimenting with.
Rangy vocals, featuring Raf’s fluid distinctive and emotional dramatic tones, guitars, bass tones, electronic textures and grooves and O Richard’s voluptuous double bass, are the palette engaged throughout the album; frequencies, as the lyrics point out - “We Are Stars in the great unknown, frequencies could be the key, high and low make the universe, the world go round, to the tune you don’t know just yet’” - from the eponymous ‘We Are Stars’.
‘Still Sitting In Our Time Machines’ is the leading single, an existential funky retro-futuristic track concerned with our human journey, dealing with themes of science fiction crossing over into modern reality.
The album will be available to pre-order from 6th October. ‘Still Sitting In Our Time Machines’ will be available immediately upon pre-order of the album.
‘Tommy Newton’, inspired by ‘The Man Who Fell To Earth’ (the 1976 science fiction film based on the novel by Walter Davis directed by Nicolas Roeg, starring David Bowie in the role of Thomas Jerome Newton and Candy Clark in the one of Mary-Lou) is a love song Raf has written from the perspective of Mary-Lou. Raf says: “It’s sad, yearning and reflecting, she’s talking to Tommy, but it’s really happening in her mind, she’s talking to herself and she’s talking to us. I loved the film all my life, just as I’ve loved Bowie”. The song earned accolades when it came out in 2021 as footage from their very first live performance and was described as Intoxicating, reflective, artistic and dramatic by God Is In The TV Zine and spellbinding by Monolith Cocktail.‘There’s Nothing I Want More’ reveals a sort of existential anxiety: just when you seem to loose all purpose and long to fall into nothing, beauty comes at your rescue, ’it could just stop you sinking too far’. Musically it’s edgy and angular in its time signature approach, yet it’s catchy and infectious. The title that seems pretty straightforward at first reveals more in its layers. There’s Nothing I Want More (of nothing?) ‘Even Pierrot strikes a pose on the moon’. ‘Eyeliner’ is a story of a young star always ready for the show. ‘A casualty of pleasure’, but he’s also a catalyst for change, a ‘dandy of the new world’ - ‘pinned up phrases on the wall are the cut-ups that inspired you’. Musically is a groovy laid back track that unravels throughout with a soaring 50s-esque chorus “Boy, you’re wearing your eyeliner and you know just how to get your way”. Elsewhere there’s ’Andy Under Stars’ depicting a homeless character heavily obsessed with Andy Warhol, the bluesy and dreamy ‘The Guardian Of Your Mind’: “You’re too hot to be cool, too desolate and dark with your printed page and champagne and your favourite game, a dreaming state, the guardian of your mind” and ’Altered Reality’ loosely inspired by ‘The Matrix’ dealing with themes of science fiction and beyond: “Deep in a state of virtual dream, is everything just what it seems?” ‘Tear The Page’ inspired by ‘Kill Your Darlings’ a film on the early days of the beat writers from their university days, parallel a song from Raf and O’s earlier album ‘Portal’, ‘Dream Machine’ and delves into the lives of the protagonists, ‘Cheap Champagne’ is a romantic encounter between two akin souls, ‘Every time It’s Bleak We Dance’, an off-kilter alternative dance track and ‘Waterloo’ draws the album to a close with the story of two individuals sharing life, grief and hope: “The strength belongs to the battered souls, a wall becomes soft as dust, don’t believe into carrying a plus sign above the shoulder line” .
Ahead of the album Raf and O have also launched Constellation Club with access to bespoke and exclusive items of merch, Raf’s original art and secret songs of the future.
